DE LA SALLE - MODEL EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT 2019

For the first-ever De La Salle - Model European Parliament (DLS-MEP), the theme will be “Regional Stability in a Divisive Society”. The European Union, being one of the prime regional organizations, emulates divisiveness in politics, but one of its main goals is stability as an International Global Actor. DLS-MEP aims to gather students with differing opinions in order to reach the common goal of regional stability through discussions and negotiations.

THE PARLIAMENT

MEPs are the representatives of the different political parties of the European Parliament. They support the ideologies and agendas of their respective political party. MEPs are also allowed to argue and lobby for their own interests on a national or personal level. The members are tasked to build connections with fellow MEPs and persuade other members to be allies. MEPs make sure that their values and interests are being heard by the whole Parliament. Furthermore, they are trained to engage in a civilised productive debate in a modern political discussion.

JOURNALIST

Journalists play a vital role in the Model European Parliament as they fulfill the role that the media plays in policy-making. Journalists are the people responsible for ensuring that EU citizens are aware of what’s taking place in the European Parliament. They ask MEPs and the committees questions regarding the proposals that the European Parliament are creating and make sure that the needs and concerns of EU citizens are voiced out. The journalists are expected to produce an article about the sessions of the Model European Parliament.

Committee Topic:
Institutionalizing the leave of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: Assessing its implications and mitigating the negative impacts on the European Union

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has long been a part of the fruitious marriage to the European mainland. In 2016, then Prime Minister David Cameron called for a vote on staying in or leaving the European Union where a slight majority voted to leave the Union. Because of this, the EU now maintains a precarious and insecure relationship with the United Kingdom. After more than 40 years of integration, the EU and the United Kingdom will need to come up with a mutually amicable divorce.

AFFAIRS

Committee Topics:
The Dublin Regulation on the refugee crisis

More than 258 million people are forcibly displaced as a result of climate, humanitarian, and socio-economic crises. 60 percent of these migrants are forced make their way to the EU to seek basic humanitarian assistance, such as provision of clean water, health care, emergency shelter and legal aid. However, under EU law, the Dublin Regulation states that asylum seekers have to remain in the first European country they enter, these being Europe's southern border countries where they receive minimal welfare provision.

Committee Topic:
Trade with China

The People’s Republic of China under Xi Jinping adopted the One Belt, One Road initiative in 2013 which saw the investment of billions of dollars into infrastructure development across cooperative Asian, African, and European states. Being second only to the United States in terms of nominal GDP, and the world’s biggest exporter of goods as well as the largest trading nation, China’s place in international trade is indisputable. However, the One Belt, One Road initiative has come under accusations that it is a plot to establish China’s dominance in global affairs under the guise of free trade.
